How To Lower Your Bounce Rate

Before we look into lowering the bounce rate of your website, it’s important we first understand what a bounce rate is. Many businesses don’t realise that a high bounce rate isn’t actually a bad thing. A ‘bounce’ is when a visitor comes to your website and only visits that one page.

 

This could be a good thing, for example if they want your contact details to phone you they will go to the ‘Contact Us’ page, therefore the visitor finds exactly what they are looking for and therefore had a great experience on your website.

 

However if you are selling something on your website and the visitor needs to go to different pages to purchase the product but they only go to one page then this would not be a good bounce. If your website has an unusually high bounce rate this can be a signal of poor user experience so it’s worth following these top tips to lower the bounce rate of your website.

 

  • Be careful of keywords with a double meaning. For example; ‘labs for sale’ may get you lots of hits for dogs, but if you are selling a laboratory and not a Labrador that traffic won’t be needed and the bounce rate will be high as the visitor will not find the cute puppies they’re hoping to see.  

  • Make it easy for the visitor to your site to find what they are looking for, if they struggle finding the information they want then they’ll just go to your competitor so make sure you keep it clear and simple.  

  • Check your website for broken links as these will cause poor user experience and drive your bounce rate right up. Identify and fix as many broken links as possible to give the user the best experience possible.  

  • If you sell your products abroad and get a lot of traffic from that country / those countries get your website translated to that language / those languages to make your website friendly for all visitors. 

  • Keep your content up to date, if you have a popular article or blog post that you wrote on 2001 then make sure the facts are up to date and it’s still true. Never leave a blog empty with a blog post from 5 yrs ago telling readers this is where they can find out all your latest news. 

  • If you have external links from your website make sure they open in a new window or you are just sending people away from your website and that could be the first page they have gone too so you’re making your bounce rate go up too. 

  • Make sure your website loads quickly, if it takes too long to load visitors to your site will just bounce off your page, straight onto the page of one of your competitors. 

  • Ensure your website is mobile responsive, if someone looks at your website on their phone and it doesn’t work or is not easy to use they’ll just close it down.
